Apple would love you to buy a new MacBook every 3 years and has made it impossible for new models to be upgraded. If you have a Macbook from 2015 or before (with acception of the 12 inch MacBook) you have good options to upgrade your MacBook. The older unibody MacBooks from 2012 and before can be upgraded with both SSD and Memory making them run like a new one! MacBook Pro Retina's can upgrade the storage by replacing the SSD drive or alternatively use an iSlice with a large Micro SD memory card. An SSD upgrade is the best performance increase you can wish for, for older non retina MacBook Pro's from 2012 and before. We advise to replace the CD-ROM drive with your old SATA drive using a special bracket and adding a second SSD as boot/application drive. Your old drive is not wasted and can be used for data storage. In this way you can spend less money on the upgrade. For data storage we do not need a high speed drive! Should I upgrade my MacBooks memory?
If you are the owner of a MacBook Air, MacBook or MacBook Pro Retina you can skip this part as these models have the memory (or RAM) soldered onto the logicboard and are not memory up-gradable. Older MacBook Pro unibodies however can upgrade the RAM. The 2010 and older models can upgrade to a maximum of 2 x 4GB = 8GB total. The Core i5/7 models can upgrade to a maximum of 2 x 8GB = 16GB total. Most people will have enough memory with the standard 4GB and have more pleasure from SSD drive upgrades. If you are still rocking 2GB, it is wise to add at least 2GB extra for smooth operation with the latest OS.
