Why choose a SATA drive?
SATA drives are old fashion spinning disks with an arm that reads the data, just like a gramophone in the old days did. Most older MacBooks and iMacs have these drives installed and one reason to replace them is they might be failing. Or, maybe you are just in need of more storage? SATA drives are the cheapest solution to increase the internal storage capacity of your MacBook. You can get them up to 4TB capacity! The disadvantage is they are more easily damaged by shocks and much slower than SSD Drives. A good alternative might be an SSHD drive. A SATA drive with a little bit of SSD storage (8GB) on top used as a cache. Cheaper then SSD, faster than SATA and a price that lies in the middle.

Why choose an SSD Drive?
SSD drives are the best choice for upgrades due to their high speed and reliability compared to older SATA drives. Prices have come down considerably. In case your old drive is still working fine, why not add a small SSD drive to be used as a boot/application drive? The old SATA drive can be installed into the CDROM slot. In that way, you can still use it for data storage saving money in the process!
